A clutch replacement is priced on parts plus labour, and both swing widely by car: a small hatchback is a different job to a diesel SUV where the gearbox is harder to get to, and some cars need the flywheel done at the same time. Anyone quoting one price for every car over the phone is guessing.
What we promise instead: we inspect it, tell you whether it’s actually the clutch (it isn’t always), and give you a fixed written quote before a single bolt comes off. No work starts without your go-ahead.
Caught early, a worn clutch is a planned job instead of a breakdown. Watch for:
Revs climb but the car doesn’t pull — clearest sign of wear.
The pedal engages right at the top of its travel.
A hot, acrid smell after hills or towing.
Effort or judder that wasn’t there before.
Hard gear changes can be clutch drag, not the gearbox.
Three things: the parts kit (clutch plate, cover and release bearing — and on many modern cars a dual-mass flywheel, which is the expensive bit), the labour hours the manufacturer books for your exact model, and whether anything else is found worn once the gearbox is off. We itemise all three on your quote so you can see exactly what you’re paying for.
Usually yes — a car that’s otherwise healthy is almost always cheaper to keep than to replace. But if the car’s value is marginal we’ll say so honestly before you commit. We’d rather lose a job than have you spend badly.
Not sure it’s the clutch? Our diagnostics in London will find out before you spend anything on parts.
Send your details and we’ll call you back to confirm a time that suits you, usually within the hour during opening times. Prefer to talk now? Call 020 8361 6123.
Most cars are done within a day; some transverse and 4x4 layouts need longer. We’ll tell you when we quote, and we’ll only keep the car as long as we said.
Briefly and gently, yes — but every mile wears it further and can overheat the flywheel, turning a clutch job into a clutch-and-flywheel job. Book it in soon.
Only if it’s worn or damaged — many cars with dual-mass flywheels do need one at clutch time. We inspect it and show you, rather than fitting one by default.
The clutch is a wear item, so manufacturer warranties rarely cover wear — but our workmanship and the parts we fit are guaranteed. Ask us for the details.
